Phyllostachys vivax, Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis', Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwenzhu', and Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwenzhu Inversa' are in stock at Davis Bamboo Nursery. These cultivars are running timber bamboos and they all grow with the same growth habit differing only appreciably in the coloration of the canes, as shown in Figure 1 below. They are full sun bamboos with canes growing vertically up to 70 feet tall and 5 inches in diameter when mature. Rated to -5 °F by the American Bamboo Society. All produce excellent bamboo shoots for eating. As these are very vigorously growing running timber bamboos they have the capacity to quickly grow into areas outside of their designated planting areas. At Davis Bamboo Nursery we strongly recommend using 36" x 80 mil rhizome barrier to control the speread of these bamboos or, in the absence of using barrier, we recommend planting at least 50 feet away from your neighbor's property line and carefully monitoring and pruning bamboo in the space between the bamboo and the property line in order to avoid having the bamboo spread into your neighbor's property. If you do not want to use a barrier and/or plant that far from the property line you may want to consider growing clumping bamboos like Bambusa textilis (Weaver's Bamboo) or Bambusa textilis 'Gracilis' which do not require rhizome barrier and can be easily planted in a responsible fashion in close proximity to property lines.
